For My Brother

A wacky tale of growing up

Veljelleni is E.L. Karhu’s play about a young woman’s journey to adulthood that addresses alienation with singular sharpness, but never loses sight of the funny side of thigs. Written for four actors, the monologue play’s starting point is a symbiotic love-hate relationship of mismatched siblings. The protagonist – a witness, a participant, the narrator – is an unnamed sister whose everyday existence veers to weird and innocent earnestness to perviness.
A leading light among playwrights of her generation, E.L. Karhu’s latest work include Eriopis (2022) and Prinsessa Hamlet (2017) that were produced by Q-teatteri to rave reviews. The Finnish National Theatre has previously staged Karhu’s work kuka tahansa meistä – dokumentti (2012). Veljelleni has also been published as a novel (Teos, 2021). Veljelleni, the play, received its world premiere in German at Schauspiel Leipzig (Für meinen Bruder) in 2022.

The play’s performance rights are managed by Nordic Drama Corner Ltd.
The performance is recommended to viewers aged 13+.
