Powerful one-woman drama
A top London criminal defence barrister, Tessa Ensler, is sexually assaulted. A devastating court case ensues, and Tessa must face the justice system she represents – as the complainant. The flawed realities Tessa encounters alter her understanding of truth and justice.
Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie is a powerful monologue and a testimonial about sexual violence and the partiality of the justice system. Before becoming a full-time writer, Miller worked as a lawyer, and her text straightforwardly illuminates how women are perpetual underdogs in a system created by men. Simultaneously, the play reminds us that law is a human construct; imperfect, but improvable – if we so desire.
Australian-born, and now London-based, Miller’s Prima Facie has been an international hit since Griffin Theatre Company’s world premiere in Sydney in 2019. The play has received multiple awards, and, with performances in theatres across the globe, it has been translated to more than 30 languages.
