Michael Baran’s fifteenth play, Kolme harjoitelmaa sodan ja rakkauden vuosilta (Three Studies from an Era of War and Love) is a striking contemporary portrayal where the personal intersects with global politics. Through monologues, it tells the stories of three women, each connected in some way to the Israel–Palestine situation. The roles are performed by an impressive quartet of actors: Inke Koskinen, Pirjo Määttä, Wenla Reimaluoto, and Sofia Smeds.
Baran’s intense new play approaches some of the most brutal and tragic events of recent history indirectly, through the lens of individual experience. Although the women in the play do not know each other, they share many things—not least music and piano playing. Another common thread is the Middle East, a region engulfed in chaos at the epicenter of global political upheaval.
Kimmo Viskari’s visual design and Kalle Ropponen’s lighting conjure a minimalist yet beautiful world on stage. The music, composed for the production by Juhani Nuorvala, is performed alternately by pianists Mariola Aniolek and Niina Ranta.
