Katariina Numminen and Milja Sarkola’s interpretation of Nobel Prize–winning author Imre Kertész’s novel Lopetus (Felszámolás / Liquidation) is a captivating and moving stage collage about history, memory, and thelong shadow of the past.

The enigmatic B’s remaining papers have come into the possession of editor Keserű (Janne Reinikainen), who would like to publish them. However, an essential piece seems to be missing from the deceased author’s legacy: a novel of which there are only vague hints of its existence. Keserű sets out to track down this masterpiece, which seems to have vanished into thin air.
The search for the missing novel becomes an obsession for Keserű—a detective mystery spanning years and involving an ever-growing cast of people: friends, loved ones, publishing professionals, and authorities. At the center of all these fates and stories is the simultaneously present and absent writer B, whose life and death are intertwined with the catastrophes of Europe’s last century.
Lopetus (Felszámolás / Liquidation) by Nobel Prize–winning Hungarian author Imre Kertész (1929–2016) is a novel whose labyrinth of multiple narrators and time layers centers on Auschwitz, which the author experienced firsthand. In terms of its temporal setting, the work is primarily situated in the period of confusion following the collapse of socialism.
